Announcing Sage’s Second Annual Young Environmental Writers Contest

Dust off your moleskines and de-cobweb your typewriters: Sage Magazine’s annual writing contest is back!

Sage is looking for works of journalism and literary nonfiction that address nature, the environment, and sustainability. We strive to publish work that blurs the boundaries between human and natural systems, that links environmental issues with social justice and wellbeing.  The only qualification for entry, however, is that your piece has not been previously published.

Big bucks — not to mention eternal glory — could soon be yours: First prize is $500, second is $300, and third is $200! All finalists will be published online and possibly in print, and will be read by our ballin’ panel of celebrity judges, including Bill McKibben (founder of 350.org), Florence Williams (author of Breasts), Carl Zimmer (science writer at the New York Times and elsewhere), and Jon Mooallem (contributing writer at the New York Times Magazine).

The deadline for submissions is April 19. Please email your work to sagemagazine@gmail.com. Good luck, and give us your best!

    Hi there!

My name is Emily Copley, I am an English student from Royal Holloway University of London. I just wanted a ask a couple of quick questions about the competition:

    1. Are you allowed to submit more than one piece of writing?

    2. Do you accept interviews, or would a free-flowing article be better received?

    Thank you for you time!

    Emily 🙂

      Hi Emily,

Thanks for checking in! In answer to your questions: 1) Yes, you can submit multiple pieces, though we ask that you limit your submissions to three; and 2) We would prefer that you submit an essay or work of reporting/narrative nonfiction rather than an interview.

Hope that helps, and we can’t wait to read your work!

      Best,
      The Editors

The contest is named the “Young Environmental Writers Contest” yet the guidelines don’t mention any age restrictions. Must writers be a certain age to submit work.

Also, what is meant by “unprofessional” writers. Most writers (including myself) don’t earn a salary from their creative / literary writing, but most certainly are professional in terms of skill and work habits. Are you saying there is an income or some other restriction on contestants?

  3. Is there a word limit on the submissions?

  4. Hi! I was just wondering if there was any rule regarding word count?

  5. The Editors says:

    Dylan and Brittany,

We ask that you please limit your submissions to 6,000 words. Thanks.

    Best,
    The Eds.
