Submissions for our 2027 print edition are now OPEN! The theme for this year’s issue is: 

Marginalia (in nature) 

Marginalia as traditionally defined refers to notes, comments, or artwork written or drawn in the margins of a book or manuscript. In these margins, we emphasize, interpret, argue, daydream. In this issue we’re asking: what is written, argued, archived, dreamed in the margins of environments, landscapes, ecosystems big and small? Take us to these edges and peripheries. 

General Guidelines

SAGE Magazine seeks provocative, critical, beautiful, captivating work from emerging and established environmental writers and artists. We welcome pieces ranging from playful to pensive. Our throughline is to strengthen and explore the relationship between humanity and the environment. 

SAGE welcomes prose, poetry, art, and photography with an environmental angle. Please send only previously unpublished work. Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please withdraw your submission if it is accepted elsewhere. Contributors may submit up to 3 pieces.

We accept:

  • Prose (personal essays, narrative journalism, and short stories up to 3,000 words) 
  • Poetry 
  • Photography and photo essays 
  • Visual art
